Skin DiscolorationSkin discoloration can be pretty unattractive. If you find that your
self-confidence is suffering because of some form of skin discoloration,
maybe it’s time for you to do something about it.
The first thing you have to know about skin discoloration is that there are
actually a variety of causes of this condition. Some types of skin
discoloration are perfectly natural, while others do indicate some sort of
skin disorder.
There are generally two types of skin discoloration: hyperpigmentation,
where there is too much color in a skin area and hypopigmentation, where
there is too little color in a skin area.
Skin discoloration can come from too much exposure to the sun and
ultraviolet radiation. The result of these activities are discolored dots on
the skin commonly called age spots or liver spots. This type of skin
discoloration has been correlated with age and sun exposure. Basically,
these spots develop if you’ve had more than enough sun during your lifetime.
There are various treatments to help you get rid of liver spots, including
laser therapy and special creams.
Skin discoloration may also be caused by trauma. The term “black and blue”,
as you might know, refers to the discoloration of the skin due to bruising.
Usually, this type of skin discoloration actually goes away after a while.
Some people suggest putting raw steak on bruises to speed up the healing
process.
Another type of skin discoloration is Vitiligo. This type of skin
discoloration is considered to be hypopigmentation, and is characterized by
smooth and white patches on the skin. Basically, Vitiligo is a disorder
where pigment-producing skin cells are damaged. There is actually no known
cure for this type of skin discoloration disorder, but there are treatment
options to help you cover up the effects.
Melasma or chloasama is also another type of skin discoloration. It is
usually observable in pregnant women, giving it the name “pregnancy mask”.
This type of skin discoloration is thought to be caused by hormone imbalance
during pregnancy. However, males also do get this type of abnormal skin
pigmentation.
Usually, Melasma goes away after a few weeks, as the hormonal imbalance is
corrected. However, some people prefer to accelerate healing through
different treatments like laser therapy. Before trying any treatment,
consult a professional to see if it is right for you. There are also certain
creams and lotions you can try to help reduce the darkness of the mask
Before attempting to treat any form of skin discoloration, you should
definitely consult a dermatologist first. There are some types of treatments
which may actually make the discoloration worse. Make sure that you know the
root cause of the skin discoloration and learn more about your options to
help get a more beautiful, even skin.
